Urgent Call for International Protection of Alawite and Christian Communities in Syria

Urgent Call for International Protection of Alawite and Christian Communities in Syria
The Issue
To: United Nations, Human Rights Organizations, and Global Leaders
Background:
Since March 6, 2025, an ongoing massacre has resulted in the systematic extermination of thousands of Alawite, Christian, and other minority civilians in Syria’s coastal regions, including Baniyas, Jibla, Latakia and Tartous, in waves of ethnic cleansing. These atrocities and ethnic cleansing campaign, confirmed by verified reports, has been orchestrated and committed by forces of the Syrian transitional government, including Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and affiliated militias. Victims include women, children, elderly and men civilians, with reports confirming were subjected to mass executions, rape, forced abductions, and large-scale displacement.
This humanitarian catastrophe is one of the worst sectarian massacres in modern history. The international community cannot remain silent. Reports Indicate that massacres are still ongoing, and the situation is deteriorating.
The Syrian transitional government has proven to be crippled, incapable and failed to act as a legitimate government body, failing to protect all its citizens. International intervention is imperative.
We Demand Immediate Action:
- Immediate Deployment of UN Peacekeeping Forces to establish a protective presence in affected areas, safeguard vulnerable communities, and prevent further ethnic cleansing and atrocities.
- Creation of Secure Humanitarian Corridors to ensure unobstructed access to emergency aid for displaced civilians and those trapped in conflict zones, preventing further humanitarian disasters.
- Urgent Referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for an immediate investigation and prosecution of individuals and groups responsible for war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity in Syria.
- Comprehensive Global Sanctions and Accountability Measures targeting HTS leaders and all affiliated factions responsible for these crimes, including an immediate halt to any international agreements that provide financial, military, or political leverage to these groups.
- Establishment of Safe Zones and Emergency Evacuation Programs to provide civilians in high-risk regions, including Syria’s coastal and urban areas, with protection under international supervision, ensuring their security and right to seek refuge without persecution.
Why This Matters:
The world has witnessed similar atrocities in Rwanda (1994), Darfur (2005), and Bosnia (1995)—and failed to act in time. We must not let history repeat itself and allow another genocide to infold before our eyes. Every moment of delay costs more innocent lives.
We, the undersigned, call upon the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and all humanitarian organizations to intervene before it is too late.
