Just over a week in, we have received over 6,500 out of 100,000+ signatures petitioning to “Lessen pet paperwork/cost for people fleeing with pets from Ukraine to the UK.”

Words cannot fully describe how we truly feel with the sheer amount of love that each and every one of you have shown for every living person and animal in and fleeing Ukraine.

Thank you so much - we love your passion and reasons that you have shared on this petition to support this cause.

Today, we’d like to take a moment to reflect

Firstly, how are you all feeling?

We understand that all of us around the world are witnessing the scale of devastation being unravelled before our eyes when Putin decided to launch an unprovoked attack on Ukraine (February, 24, 2022).

We hope that you are ok and we recognise that it is ok to talk about how you feel because it is hard to see the war against humanity in this modern era.

This week, across social media platforms, the press and news broadcasts we are all simply on edge reading, hearing and seeing the stories from survivors. The harrowing events that’s unfolding right now in Ukraine can be hard to know which source is telling the truth. One of friends worked as a journalist for the BBC, her advice would be to look for trusted news sources from BBC, Sunday Times, The Times, The Economist, The Independent, NY Times (New York) and FT. I wanted to also add, besides the media, please be aware of scammers and only work with registered charities with legitimate charity numbers for trusted sources.

We have pulled together facts to help filter through the noise of the internet:

  • BBC News, reports that more than one million people have now fled Ukraine, with the EU suggesting that number could rise to four million. Charities IFAW, PETA, Four Paws are working hard to rescue animals and supply food and shelter.
  • BBC News, states "It's almost impossible to evacuate animals, because it's impossible to provide appropriate veterinary service and transportation," says Kyrylo Trantin, the zoo's chief.
  • The Independent, reports Ukrainians/Expats in Ukraine won’t be separated from beloved pets as residents shelter from Russian attack with cats and dogs.
  • Volunteers and supporters around the world including you, are united to help  women, children, pets and men to survive.
  • PETA UK reports, that Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Bulgaria have relaxed some of the travel corridors for people with pets fleeing Ukraine.

Yet, there is so much for us to do still. UK Government could be doing more!

The reality in Ukraine, is that pets are being abandoned, people are desperately hoping they can escape with pets, people are left making difficult choices because of country rules on disease control but animals have died, trapped or dying from the impact of war, some being euthanised, some are injured, some are starving. Then there are shelter animals, what is going to happen to them?

In a lot of cases, families are desperately reaching out via social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to rescue their pets they had to leave behind. Because when the reached the border, their pets were refused entry despite the message of easing restrictions. (Evidence: https://www.facebook.com/groups/480671290390692/permalink/486309516493536/)

Surely, every country ministers, politicians and presidents can act quicker and do more to make it easier for people to leave Ukraine with their pets?

*** We also want to share the real story of Andrea Cisternino ***

Andrea Cisternino, runs a 400 animal sanctuary in Kiev - he hasn’t left and surviving every day to ensure his animals and rescued pets are looked after.

While we are campaigning for those who are fortunate to flee Ukraine, we must remember that others are less so like Andrea. For legitimate updates and ways to support, please reach out to recognised charities only.

Here are some charities we are supporting:

On a closing note, we will provide another update shortly - Stay tuned.

If we can continue to come together and campaign to reach over 7,500 signatures soon, we will hopefully be featured and get a reaction from Boris Johnson, UK Parliament, UNICEF and Council of the European Union.

Please keep sharing, please continue to help as every life matters - let’s unite to help keep families together; women, children, pets and men.

Thank you for your support, your love and your empathy. Give your loved ones and your pets hugs and love this weekend.

Best wishes

Friends and Family of Gavin and Eli
