Urgent action to improve road safety for Oakey children
The issue
Urgent action to improve road safety for Oakey children following an incident involving a child being hit by bus on his way to school.
A child was recently hit by a bus at the intersection of Delray Street and Aubigny Street near Oakey State High School. This incident has highlighted serious safety concerns for students and families who use this area daily.
This road is heavily used by children travelling to and from school, particularly between 7:00am–9:00am and 2:00pm–4:00pm. Despite this, there are currently inadequate safety measures in place to protect pedestrians.
We are calling for urgent action to improve safety in this area, including:
Installation of a safe pedestrian crossing across Aubigny Street
Extension of the 40km/h school zone further along this street,
Flashing school zone warning signs and adequate measures to slow traffic during peak school hours and onsideration of a school crossing supervisor (lollipop person) at each crossing.
This is about preventing the next incident. No child should be at risk simply getting to and from school.
We urge Toowoomba Regional Council and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to prioritise a safety assessment and implement these changes as soon as possible.
