James Guest was more than just a coach to us at Thornhill Secondary School; he was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding force who shaped our school experience in immeasurable ways. He dedicated his time, energy, and love to nurturing our potential and instilling values that we will carry with us through life. For many of us, Mr. Guest was a beacon of integrity, team spirit, and perseverance.

Sadly, Coach Guest passed away, leaving behind not only a legacy but also a void that is deeply felt in our hearts and in the halls of Thornhill Secondary. In light of his profound impact, we believe it is both fitting and necessary to honour his memory by hanging a jersey with his name and number in the school gym where he spent countless hours coaching and inspiring students.

Despite our heartfelt request, the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) has not yet given us the permission to commemorate Coach Guest in this meaningful way. Their hesitance underscores the need for us to collectively voice how much this memorial means to the staff, students, alumni, and local community members who have been touched by his dedication.

The tradition of hanging jerseys serves as a remembrance of those who've made significant contributions to our sports programs and community. This act not only preserves Coach Guest's legacy but also serves as a constant inspiration for current and future students at Thornhill. It would remind all who enter the gym of the excellence and passion that he exemplified every day.

We are asking for your support in petitioning the YRDSB to approve this request to honour Coach James Guest in a manner befitting his contribution to our school and his enduring influence on thousands of students. We would like to make this clear, this is not a petition against the Principal or any of the staff at our school. We are petitioning the York Region District School Board’s absurd policy against the memorialization of staff and students, which is directly blocking us from honouring our beloved teacher, friend and coach.
