Urge YouTube to End Intrusive Age Verification

Urge YouTube to End Intrusive Age Verification
The Issue
This isn’t about our kids—this is about control and censorship. If we don’t take a stand now, we risk being forced into a dangerous precedent of handing over personal information like biometrics, credit card info, or even our IDs—things no one should have to disclose to any corporation or government entity. It’s not YouTube’s job to watch over our shoulder and play helicopter parent, and it shouldn't come at the cost of degrading the experience for all users.
In recent times, YouTube has launched extensive age verification efforts under the guise of protecting minors. However, this approach not only invades our privacy but also sets a precedent for increased surveillance. Studies have shown that policies requiring age verification do not effectively keep inappropriate content away from minors—such efforts frequently result in reduced accessibility for legitimate users, as noted by privacy advocacy groups.
Moreover, handing over sensitive personal information just to watch videos on a platform that's supposed to be about user-generated content is impractical and overreaching. While safeguarding young viewers is important, it should not be an excuse for infringing on everyone's privacy. The reality is that responsible parenting and effective use of existing parental controls can provide significant protection without the need for intrusive measures.
Instead of imposing broad, one-size-fits-all restrictions, YouTube should consider investing in educational resources for parents and improving existing content filters. These are practical, respectful ways to ensure age-appropriate content while respecting user privacy.
Join us in urging YouTube to re-evaluate their stance on age verification and adopt approaches that support both child safety and individual privacy. Let's remind them that it's our job to raise our kids—not theirs. Please sign this petition to support our fight against unnecessary control and safeguard our right to privacy.
