The Issue

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is at a crossroads as it prepares to hold its 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14) in Yaoundé, Cameroon. Cameroon’s current situation is troubling: there are credible reports of election fraud, many political prisoners like Djeukam Tchameni are behind bars, and the anglophone regions remain in conflict. Choosing Yaoundé for such an important meeting is not a neutral act. It sends the wrong message—that the WTO is willing to turn a blind eye to serious problems with democracy and human rights in Cameroon.

We urge the WTO to reconsider this choice. The WTO’s reputation depends on its commitment to democracy, transparency, and the rule of law. Holding MC14 in a country where more than 2,500 people are imprisoned for their political beliefs—including those linked to the Anglophone crisis—goes against everything the WTO claims to stand for.

If the conference must take place in Cameroon, the WTO cannot remain silent. It must demand that the government immediately release all political prisoners, including Djeukam Tchameni and others jailed for their opinions. The WTO should also insist on real, open talks with Anglophone leaders to find a peaceful solution for the anglophone regions. This is necessary for true stability and justice.

The controversy around the October 2025 presidential election makes these demands even more urgent. Many inside and outside Cameroon believe that Paul Biya was not the legitimate winner. To restore trust, the government should respect the people’s choice and recognize the true result of the election. At the very least, it should publish results from every polling station so everyone can see the real outcome. Many believe this would confirm Issa Tchiroma Bakary as the rightful winner. Only real transparency and respect for the people’s will can restore faith in democracy.

If the WTO ignores these facts, it will be seen as supporting a government that has failed its people and ignored basic rights and freedoms. This would mean the WTO has abandoned its own principles.

We call on everyone who cares about democracy and human rights to demand that the WTO cancel or move MC14 from Yaoundé. If that cannot happen, then the WTO must use its voice to demand the release of political prisoners, real dialogue for peace, and honest respect for the people’s vote. The world must not help cover up the loss of democracy. Sign this petition to show that global organizations must stand with the people, not with oppressive governments.
