The Issue

My son is fortunate enough to be passionate about both rugby and football. Like many children in Rhondda, he cherishes his time on the pitch, whether he's passing a rugby ball or kicking a football. Unfortunately, he has to make a difficult choice every weekend between the two sports that bring him joy. This is not just my son's story; it mirrors the predicament faced by numerous children who are keenly juggling their interests in both sports.

In Rhondda, WRU and FAW junior league fixtures are often scheduled for the same day, creating a needless conflict that forces children to choose between the two. This situation undermines the benefits of multi-sport participation, which includes improved athletic skills, reduced risk of injury, and increased enjoyment in sports. Research consistently shows that children who engage in multiple sports are more likely to enjoy physical activities and stay active for life.

The solution lies within the reach of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and the Football Association of Wales (FAW). By collaborating, these two national bodies can establish guidelines that ensure local junior league matches are scheduled on different days, thereby enabling children to fully engage in both sports without the need for compromise.

Such a scheduling change promotes inclusive participation and respects the diverse passions of our young athletes. By empowering them to pursue multiple sports weekly, we pave the way for their all-rounded development and lifelong love for physical activities.

We call upon the WRU and FAW to work together in crafting these guidelines and take a decisive step towards building a more harmonious and flexible sporting calendar. Your signature can make a significant difference in advocating for our children's ability to enjoy both rugby and football without having to make unnecessary sacrifices.

Join us in our mission to enrich the sporting experience for young athletes in Rhondda and beyond by signing this petition. Let’s ensure our children have the opportunity to thrive in every sport they wish to pursue.

Please contact myself (Laura Kelland) on 07584424811 or Gavin Morris (Tinner) on 07852245865 if you are able to help.
