Imagine pouring your heart and soul into countless stories on a platform, nurturing them over time only to have them vanish overnight. Just like that, they're gone - not stored on your computer or accessible on your phone, as you wholeheartedly trusted in the platform to keep safe the stories that, for many, are a significant source of livelihood. This is precisely what thousands of Wattpad writers are experiencing, as accounts have been removed without notice, explanation, or any form of prior warning.

Recently, Wattpad has removed thousands of writers' accounts without any communication or notice. Writers devoted years of creativity to crafting narratives, investing a great deal of time, energy, and emotion. Countless authors are now left devastated, having lost their life's work, simply because of Wattpad's lack of communication and transparency in their account management. No emails, no warnings, just downright disappearance of rights to our own creative property.

For some, these stories are more than just tales to be told—they are the very essence of their identity and source of income. Sadly, this doesn't end with just account removals. There have been widespread accounts of mass hacking incidents targeting users' accounts on Wattpad, leaving these authors not only insecure but paralyzed as their stories vanish without a trace.

It is imperative that Wattpad takes responsibility for this heartbreaking situation by implementing a system that safeguards the creative rights of its users. Writers must be notified before any action is taken toward removing their account. Furthermore, policies must be put in place to ensure that if accounts are hacked or compromised, stories can be transferred safely back to their rightful owners. This can be done via transfer in a secure format, like email or document files (such as .docx).

End overreliance on automated moderation. Decisions that permanently affect writers, readers, and years of creative work should never rely solely on automated systems. Artificial intelligence must not serve as content moderator and as the final decision-maker in account suspensions or permanent removals. Every significant enforcement action should be subject to meaningful human review before it is carried out.

Wattpad must be held accountable for ensuring that its moderation and account enforcement processes are fair, transparent, and subject to appropriate oversight. Reports from affected users indicate that automated decisions have, in some cases, resulted in the removal of accounts belonging to individuals who believe they did not violate the platform's policies.

Equally concerning is the handling of user support. Many writers have reported unanswered appeal requests, unresolved support tickets, and prolonged periods without communication. A platform that hosts millions of creative works has a responsibility to provide timely, transparent, and effective support to its community.

We call on Wattpad to:

- End reliance on fully automated decisions for permanent account enforcement.

- Require qualified human reviewers to evaluate account suspensions and removals before they become final.

- Improve the appeals process by providing timely responses and clear explanations for moderation decisions.

- Invest in a well-staffed human support team capable of assisting writers and readers fairly and efficiently.

Creative communities deserve accountability, transparency, and due process. Writers should never lose years of work without meaningful human review and access to effective support.

We urge Wattpad to overhaul their support and help management system, ensuring that communication lines with writers remain open and that changes to account status are accompanied by transparent, explanatory warnings. Wattpad must prioritize the security and ownership of the written content to restore trust among its writers.
