My cat, TomTom, is FIV+ and suffers from chronic stomatitis, a painful condition that has caused some of his teeth to fall out. The only medication that offers hope for both his FIV and stomatitis is Interferon Omega. Interferon Omega is widely used in Europe and Asia to treat cats with FIV, FeLV, stomatitis, and other chronic immune-related conditions. Studies and real-life outcomes have shown its ability to reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and in many cases, prolong survival. Despite this, U.S. pet owners are left in limbo. Importing the drug is risky as cold-chain requirements make it vulnerable to spoilage in transit, customs can delay or reject the shipment, and the cost for a single course of treatment can exceed $600. Worst of all, most suppliers require buyers to accept these risks upfront, meaning that if the medication arrives warm or unusable, there is no refund or replacement.

Cats like TomTom deserve a better quality of life. However, many pet owners struggle due to the unavailability of Interferon Omega in the United States. This medication, already utilized in other countries, has shown promising results in treating cats with FIV, FeLV, and other chronic conditions like stomatitis. Despite its demonstrated benefits, U.S. cats are missing out because Virbac has not initiated the FDA approval process. Therefore, we are left with limited, invasive, or temporary solutions such as full-mouth extractions that may not relieve their suffering, or steroids that suppress symptoms but weaken immunity over time. Meanwhile, a life-changing medication already exists. It just isn’t available here.

By starting the FDA approval process, Virbac and/or other manufacturers can make Interferon Omega accessible to countless cats who need it. This not only alleviates the financial burden on pet owners who resort to costly imports but also ensures the medicine reaches those in need in a viable condition.
