URGE USEF TO ALLOW UV GOGGLES IN EVENTING & DRESSAGE COMPETITIONS

The Issue

This past summer, my horse, Lanier, was diagnosed with Viral Keratitis as a result of Equine Herpesvirus-2. As a result of this diagnosis, Lanier suffers from light sensitivity, also known as Photophobia. It requires meticulous daily management to ensure his comfort and ocular health. Lanier's sensitivity to light could have compromised his ability to participate in equestrian events that we both cherish, such as Eventing and Dressage. Fortunately, the innovative design of eQuick eVysor goggles has significantly alleviated his discomfort, allowing him to experience enhanced vision and reduced pain when exposed to sunlight.

However, despite the clear benefits these goggles have provided to Lanier, the use of UV protective eyewear is not currently permitted in competitive Eventing and Dressage by the U.S. Equestrian Federation (USEF). This limitation not only affects Lanier but countless other horses suffering from similar conditions. Horses, like humans, can experience various degrees of photophobia due to distinct underlying issues, warranting intervention for their well-being and performance longevity.

According to the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), Equine Herpesvirus is prevalent among horses, with estimates suggesting that the majority of horses will be exposed to some form of the virus during their lifetime. The viral strain responsible for infections like Lanier's can lead to severe discomfort without appropriate intervention, and the spectrum of available protective gear must evolve to address this pressing need.

To make Eventing and Dressage inclusive and considerate of all participants, we implore the U.S. Equestrian Federation to reevaluate their policies regarding protective equipment. Simple measures such as approving UV goggles for use in competition can make a world of difference not only for the affected horses but also for their dedicated riders who strive to provide the best care.

Join us in advocating for the approval of UV protective goggles in equestrian competitions. It is time for these sports to recognize and accommodate necessary healthcare innovations that enhance the quality of life for horses like Lanier. Your support and action can lead to a future where no horse has to suffer from treatable vision problems due to regulatory constraints.
