Comment period extended to February7. Send comments to: RahwayRiver@usace.army.mil The public comment period on the Rahway River Flood Mitigation plan has been extended to February 7. Instructions on sending comments can be found at www.nan.usace.army.mil/Rahway. Importantly, your voice to urge flood protection is needed. Please comment. Over 1600 homes in Cranford were damaged during Hurricane Irene with 400 families with first floors having floodwater damage. Public safety of residents was compromised. 70,000 tons of debris was left to cart away. Significant damages took place from Millburn to Rahway. Questions arose will this happen again. Sustainability as a community requires action. US Army Corps, NJ DEP and communities along river have been at it for several years evaluating ten alternatives narrowing to the one that has the strongest benefit cost ratio. US Congress has authorized engineering and pre-construction in the Federal Water Resources Development Act once US Army Corps of Engineers report is approved. This plan doesn't resolve all flooding impact but is a material improvement in protection. Better stormwater management is needed too.
