Urge UN to Act Against India's Unjust Imprisonment of Yasin Malik

Urge UN to Act Against India's Unjust Imprisonment of Yasin Malik
The Issue
The story of Muhammad Yasin Malik is, in many ways, the story of Kashmir itself: a tale of courage, sacrifice, and a relentless quest for dignity. From his beginnings in the armed resistance to his later decision to embrace peaceful political struggle, Malik has demonstrated foresight and character. This is not a journey seeking personal gain but one of a leader committed to exploring all avenues for peace and justice.
It is deeply concerning that a man, once known as a bridge between conflicting forces and honored by Indian leaders themselves for espousing non-violence, is now languishing in Tihar Jail under terrorism charges. Malik's arrest and life sentence are not only an affront to his fundamental rights but also a severe blow to the peace process in the region, threatening to plunge Kashmir into deeper turmoil.
The use of anti-terrorism laws by the Indian government as a tool to stifle peaceful political dissent is a flagrant violation of international human rights principles. This case reflects a broader pattern of abuse and suppression in Kashmir, where voices for peace and autonomy are met with heavy-handed retaliation rather than dialogue and understanding.
We call upon Professor Ben Saul, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights while Countering Terrorism, to intervene urgently. An investigation into India's misuse of its terror laws is essential to safeguard not just Malik’s rights, but also to uphold international standards of justice and democracy.
Supporting Malik's release is a step towards reaffirming the commitment to peaceful resolution and justice. It is imperative to press upon the Indian government the necessity to review Malik's case under fair judicial standards free from political influence or retribution.
Sign this petition to stand with Yasin Malik and the people of Kashmir, whose struggle mirrors the pursuit of universally cherished principles of freedom and dignity.
