As of February 2026, Gaza is widely considered to have passed the threshold of "unliveability" due to catastrophic damage to its infrastructure, health systems, and economy during more than two years of conflict. While a ceasefire agreement was reached on 10 October 2025, which led to a reduction in active bombardment and a slight increase in aid, the territory remains in a state of humanitarian disaster.

The following conditions currently define life in Gaza:
Mass Displacement & Housing: Over 90% of the population (nearly 2 million people) is displaced. An estimated 70–90% of all buildings have been damaged or destroyed, forcing families to live in "a sea of tents," overcrowded schools, or even inside bombed-out ruins.
Famine and Water Crisis: Famine was officially declared in areas including Gaza City in August 2025. Roughly 90% of water and sanitation infrastructure is destroyed, leaving most residents without access to clean water or functional sewage systems.
Medical Collapse: Only 14 of Gaza's 36 hospitals are even partially functional, and they operate under extreme shortages of basic supplies like antibiotics and gauze. Preventable diseases like hepatitis A and gastrointestinal infections account for 70% of medical consultations.
Economic Ruin: The economy collapsed by an estimated 83% in 2024, with unemployment reaching 80%. All 2.3 million residents are currently living below the poverty line.
Reconstruction Timeline: The United Nations estimates it could take at least 15 years and over $50 billion to rebuild Gaza to a "liveable" state, provided that reconstruction materials are allowed to enter freely.

Even before the current conflict, the UN had warned in 2012 that Gaza would be "unliveable" by 2020 due to the long-standing blockade and deteriorating services. Those warnings were revised in 2017 to state that the threshold had already been surpassed.
