As of 20 February 2026, Gaza remains in a state of catastrophic humanitarian crisis despite a fragile ceasefire agreement that has been in effect since October 2025.

While active large-scale fighting has subsided under the first phase of a peace deal, intermittent violence continues to claim lives, and the territory faces unprecedented levels of starvation and infrastructure collapse.

Ceasefire and Peace Plan: A US-brokered peace deal led by the Trump administration's Board of Peace is currently in its second phase. As of February 2026, Israel reportedly controls approximately 53% of the Gaza Strip, while Hamas continues to reassert control over security and government services in areas not under Israeli military occupation.

Hostages and Detainees: No Israeli hostages remain in Gaza; the final accounts were settled in late January 2026. In exchange, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has facilitated the release of thousands of Palestinian detainees.
