The Issue

I am a widowed mother to a wonderful four-year-old boy named Liam Nobu Wakayama. Attending preschool in Japan is not only a personal dream but could also profoundly benefit Liam by allowing him to connect with his cultural heritage. Having the opportunity to study abroad in Machida, Japan, through the University
of Hawaii at Manoa's program would significantly improve my life on multiple fronts: academically, professionally, and personally. Furthermore, I qualify for the Yoshihiro & Tamah Nakamura Memorial scholarship, designed to support local Hawaii high school graduates, which would help fund my interest in studying public health in Japan.

I currently have a 3.9 gpa however, despite exceeding all academic requirements for the study abroad program, my application was denied simply because I have a child. The host institution, J.F. Oberlin University, does not currently offer accommodations for students who are parents. I have offered to provide my own living & child care arrangements should both universities reconsider. This decision not only halts my educational and professional aspirations but also limits Liam from experiencing a culturally enriching opportunity.

Being denied solely for having a child seems unfair and outdated, especially in an increasingly inclusive society. Many universities around the world, including in Hawaii, have successfully integrated family accommodations, offering resources and support for student parents. The University of Hawaii at Manoa has a prime opportunity to set a precedent by collaborating with J.F. Oberlin University to create a pilot program or find alternative solutions that include student parents like myself.

I am appealing to the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Study Abroad Department and J.F. Oberlin University to reconsider their decision and work towards making this dream a reality for me and my son—without forcing a choice between educational pursuits and parental responsibilities. By signing this petition, you are supporting not only my academic journey but also advocating for broader inclusivity and equality in educational opportunities for all student parents. Please join me in urging the University of Hawaii at Manoa to reconsider the decision and enable us to benefit from this unique cross-cultural educational experience.
