Urge UBC to prohibit residential school denialism events
The Issue
Residential School denialism promotes white supremacy, racism, and misinformation which should not be permitted in public institutions. On January 22, 2026, an event took place outside the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre that denied the truths and atrocities of the Residential School system.
The Residential School system is a dark chapter in Canada's history, where Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their families and subjected to harsh conditions in an attempt to erase their cultures and identities. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has documented these realities, and acknowledging this history is crucial to the healing and reconciliation process for survivors and their families.
We call upon UBC to take concrete steps to prevent any future Residential School denialism events on its campus. This includes implementing strict policies that prohibit such activities, increasing educational initiatives about the Residential School system, and showing clear support for Indigenous communities in their journey towards healing.
Join us in demanding accountability and action from UBC to ensure that its campus remains a place of respect, truth, and inclusivity. Please sign this petition to urge UBC to stand firm against Residential School denialism. Truth and Reconciliation must translate to ReconciliACTION.
