Urge Trump to Revoke the Executive Order on Deep-Sea Mining — Protect Our Oceans!

Urge Trump to Revoke the Executive Order on Deep-Sea Mining — Protect Our Oceans!
The Issue
On April 24, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. government to accelerate permitting processes for deep-sea mineral extraction to access critical minerals and "reduce dependency on China".
This move aims to fast-track exploration and mining licenses for mining companies, map the U.S. outer continental shelf, and assess commercial opportunities. However, this initiative comes with very dangerous and important environmental concerns.
Deep-sea mining poses vey serious risks to marine ecosystems. Studies have shown that disturbances from mining activities can lead to long-lasting damage to the seabed, with some areas showing little to no recovery even after several decades. The sediment plumes generated by mining operations can smother marine life, disrupt feeding and breeding grounds, and release stored carbon, contributing to climate change.
The executive order challenges the authority of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), a United Nations body responsible for regulating mineral-related activities in international waters. By bypassing the ISA, the U.S. risks undermining international agreements designed to protect the ocean’s health and biodiversity.
We call upon President Trump to revoke the executive order promoting deep-sea mining!
Our oceans are vital to the planet’s health, providing oxygen, regulating climate, and supporting diverse marine life. We must prioritize their protection over short-term economic gains.
