Urge the WHO to stop the suffering of baby monkeys in experiments at Washington University
The issue
As a growing worldwide movement united by compassion for animals, we are deeply disturbed by the continued use of primates and all animals in scientific experiments that cause pain, distress, and suffering. We believe that no animal should be subjected to unnecessary cruelty in the name of scientific research, and we are petitioning the World Health Organisation and the United Nations for greater accountability, transparency, and humane alternatives.
Every year, thousands of primates are subjected to experiments that cause immense physical pain and psychological distress. These experiments often leave the animals with irreversible damage, both mentally and physically. The footage I witnessed showed monkeys restrained, as they were forced to endure relentless procedures, probes, and surgical interventions. This treatment is not only barbaric but also raises significant ethical concerns about the rights and welfare of these animals.
Our attention is now focused on the treatment of primates at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where disturbing video footage curtesy of PETA has reportedly documented the treatment of infant monkeys used in scientific experiments. This video footage depicts the brutal and ruthless treatment of baby primates in scientific experiments conducted at Washington University. These babies are shrieking out in immense pain and fear while scientists inflict unimaginable pain to them through torture filled experiments.
PETA has documented and exposed several key practices through investigative footage, public records, and researcher statements. Infant monkeys are frequently separated from their mothers within days or weeks of birth, left with blankets and bottles instead of maternal care. According to PETA, researchers have performed experiments where days-old monkeys have the tendons in their eyes sliced or are forced to wear vision-distorting goggles for months. Later, researchers drill into their skulls, install recording chambers, attach metal head-posts to restrain them in chairs, and insert metal coils into their eyes to track eye movements and brain activity while they perform visual tasks for food rewards.
Pregnant and infant monkeys have been exposed to neurotoxins to test how developing brains are damaged, leading to tremors and neurological impairment over weeks or years of tests. Other labs at the primate centre have drilled into monkey skulls, infused viruses into brain tissue, subjected animals to multiple invasive surgeries, and used food or water deprivation as a sadistic leverage to force compliance during testing loops. This type of tortuous treatment must be globally exposed and abolished.
According to documentation, many of the infant and young monkeys used in these long-term studies are killed once the experiments conclude. The images of these intelligent, sentient beings suffering for the sake of research are deeply disturbing.
Washington University has been a hub for such experiments - deliberately breeding primates for unwarranted and barbaric testing. Nevertheless, there exist alternative methods of research that do not involve the exploitation and suffering of animals. Advanced technologies, such as computer modelling, cell cultures, and micro-dosing human volunteers, offer promising and ethical options for scientific exploration. It is imperative that the scientific community transitions towards these humane practices, which respect animal rights and are more aligned with modern ethical standards.
This petition aims to raise awareness and urge the World Health Organisation to intervene and put an end to these inhumane experiments immediately. The WHO advocates the rapid implementation of animal-free testing methods in close consultation with authorities.
This issue is not just a local concern but a global one. The failure to address and rectify the use of harmful experimentation sets a dangerous precedent for research ethics worldwide. The World Health Organisation and the United Nations, as prominent international bodies that advocate for the environment and human rights, should extend their mission to protect all sentient beings from cruelty and needless suffering.
We urgently call upon the United Nations to conduct an investigation into the practices at Washington University and to pressure member states to adhere to international standards that prohibit the use of primates in merciless scientific experiments. With enough voices, we can make a significant impact and push for a change towards more compassionate and ethical scientific research.
Demand an end to the suffering of infant primates in scientific experiments. Every life deserves compassion, protection, and a chance to live free from pain. Join us in protecting these voiceless creatures by signing this petition. Together, we can bring an end to the agony faced by primates in research labs and promote a future where science and compassion coexist.
