My name is Elianet Oliva and my family needs your help to bring my grandma home to us. My 81-year-old grandma, Carmen, is a Cuban citizen that, due to the Havana Embassy being closed, is having her Family Reunification Visa processed through the U.S. Embassy in Guyana. We were overjoyed when she finally received her visa appointment for April 9th of this year. The idea of being able to hug her after more than three years of separation and take care of her during her final years kept us motivated during the whole process. However, our happiness has quickly transformed into fear as we are now facing the reality that our beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch has had to spend 25 days in Guyana and may have to stay there by herself for many more weeks or even months. The reason for this indefinite delay…a lack of TB Sputum test solutions available in the country and the lack of coordination for this process to be done timely, in accordance with the CDC guidelines for healthy immigration.
As U.S. Citizens, we understand that there are steps to follow in all immigration cases. We have been strictly adhering to this since the beginning more than 3 years ago. We have read all CDC guidelines and agreed to uphold them, as we understand why these guidelines are in place. Because we need a solution, we are reaching out to anyone and everyone who is willing to hear us and to give my grandma a voice where she has none. We are requesting that she is provided with a TB sputum test date and process immediately OR for her case to be transferred to another country where they can provide said required test, including the U.S. Embassy in Havana. The consulate in Havana, her home country, is opening as of May 2022 and appear to have the resources to provide the test. Because the results of the test require 6-8 weeks, it is crucial to have the test scheduled immediately.
My hope is that this petition reaches individuals who can raise their voices and urge the U.S. Embassy in Guyana and CDC to provide solutions, not just for my grandma, but for hundreds of other Cubans. Legal immigrants, who despite having followed all the rules and waiting patiently to be reunited with their families, will continue to be stranded in Guyana because of the lack of seriousness and accountability when it comes to the implementation of immigration and health guidelines.
