The Issue

My name is Charlee Remitz. I’m on a mission to see every lighthouse in the US. I’ve seen 535 of the 800ish that are mostly still standing. I do consider myself something of an authority on this subject.

Lighthouses are unique—they are something we can all agree on. Worldwide, lighthouses have become a great beacon of hope in uncertain times and light in uncertain darkness. They are at the mouths of the world’s busiest ports, watching over freighters filled with consumer goods that keep us clothed, fed, and connected.

It is something of a mystery—this lack of a lighthouse emoji, given the great service each and every lighthouse has committed itself to: life-saving. And I believe now, more than ever, is a keen and strangely perfect time to give every emoji keyboard on planet earth a lighthouse and a tiny piece of hope we can all carry around in our pockets.

There is a proposed lighthouse emoji in the running for Emoji 18.0, which would hit keyboards in late 2026 or sometime in 2027!
