Urge the State Department to issue visas for adopted children in Hong Kong
The Issue
In a time when a child waits anxiously to join her forever family, delays are difficult to endure. Our daughter Emmy, who has been longing to be part of our family for seven years, now faces an unexpected hurdle—a suspension of visa interviews at the US Consulate in Hong Kong. This suspension leaves her waiting longer, not just for the love and support of a family, but also for crucial medical attention she so desperately needs.
Emmy suffers from multiple conditions that require monitoring and treatment. These necessary medical interventions are more than she currently receives. The visa suspension puts her health at risk—a delay in obtaining the care she needs and a delay in receiving the family support each child deserves.
We had made plans to travel to bring Emmy home the week of September 20, but now, with the halt in visa processing, we are left in a state of uncertainty. The suspension is intended to allow for consuls to be trained in rejecting immigrant visas that pose an increased risk of financial strain on public assistance programs. NO adoptee fits in this category as potential adoptive parents are thoroughly screened many times over (and over and over!) to insure they are able to provide for their adoptive child.
The suspension touches not just Emmy, but also countless children and families who find themselves separated by bureaucracy during these unforeseen times. We understand the complexities and challenges brought about by unprecedented events, but it is crucial to find solutions that prioritize the well-being of adopted children like Emmy.
We urge the State Department to allow for the safe and expedited issuance of visas for adopted children in cases where their medical and familial needs are urgent. This can include virtual interviews, prioritized processing for medical cases, or other creative solutions given the current context. These steps will ensure that innocent children, like Emmy, can receive the care and support they need without undue delay.
