Urge the Royal Kennel Club to prioritise health and walfare at Crufts

Urge the Royal Kennel Club to prioritise health and walfare at Crufts
The Issue
The poor quality of some of this year's Crufts winners highlights an ongoing issue: the Royal Kennel Club still has a significant journey ahead to ensure the health and welfare of the dogs displayed at this prestigious event. As a spectator and a passionate dog lover, I am aware how the lack of stringent health checks and inbreeding practices compromise the well-being of these beloved animals.
Dogs with questionable genetics and health issues have managed to secure accolades, thereby sending a discouraging message about prioritizing aesthetics over animal welfare. This not only tarnishes the reputation of Crufts as a leading dog show but also encourages irresponsible breeding practices. To address these concerns, we urgently need the Royal Kennel Club to implement decisive measures.
Firstly, all entries in the conformation show at Crufts should be required to undergo comprehensive health testing that aligns with breed club standards. By doing so, we ensure that only the healthiest dogs, with robust heritable traits, take the stage. It is essential that prospective entries be forbidden if they are bred from over-utilized sires or if their inbreeding coefficient exceeds the breed average.
Furthermore, any individual with convictions under the Animal Welfare Act should be prohibited from entering the competition. This measure ensures that those placing priority on welfare and humane treatment are rightly acknowledged over those with a history of neglect or abuse.
According to a report by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), unhealthy breeding practices contribute significantly to hereditary diseases, resulting in a compromised quality of life for affected dogs. Enforcing such regulations at Crufts will not only uphold the event’s legacy but also inspire breeders worldwide to adopt more ethical practices.
Lending your signature to this petition is supporting a future where the Crufts standards reflect a commitment to health, ethics, and canine happiness. Together, we can press the Royal Kennel Club to make these essential changes that will significantly benefit the welfare of all dogs involved. Please help us reform these practices by signing this petition, and let's create a healthier future for dogs at Crufts and beyond.
