The Issue

Why This Matters
The recent cessation of the Airport Hopper service has left communities in Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan, Leixlip, Maynooth, and other areas without a direct, reliable, and affordable connection to Dublin Airport. For years, the Airport Hopper provided an essential service to these areas, offering an economical and convenient travel option for those working unsociable hours, carrying luggage, or seeking an alternative to driving. Its affordability—once as low as €10 for a trip—contrasts sharply with the cost of taxis, which now range from €40 to €60.

However, as of 10 February 2025, this vital service has ceased operations due to financial difficulties. Despite efforts by Airport Hopper Holdings Ltd to reduce fares and increase passenger numbers, rising costs for fuel, tolls, insurance, and airport charges made the service financially unsustainable.

The Impact
The sudden withdrawal of this service has created a significant gap in public transportation. Residents in affected areas are now left without a dedicated airport route, forcing many back into cars or taxis, increasing traffic congestion, emissions, and costs for travelers.
This is especially problematic given the lack of a proper rail link to Dublin Airport, leaving buses as the primary alternative. With other private operators like Aircoach also cutting back services, the options for sustainable, affordable transport are dwindling.

What We’re Asking For
We, the undersigned, call on the National Transport Authority (NTA) to step in and replace the Airport Hopper routes with subsidised Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes.
The NTA has acknowledged that it evaluates connectivity gaps when commercial operators withdraw services. This is clearly such a case, and an intervention is urgently needed.

Subsidised PSO routes could:
1. Provide Affordable Travel: Ensure low-cost travel options for airport passengers and workers.
2. Promote Sustainable Transport: Reduce reliance on private cars and taxis, aligning with national climate goals.
3. Support Communities: Restore vital connectivity for residents in Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan, Leixlip, and Maynooth.
4. Enhance Public Transport Infrastructure: Lay the groundwork for longer-term solutions, such as the long-overdue Metrolink.

Join Us in Demanding Action
Dublin Mid-West TDs, including Mark Ward and Paul Gogarty, and Dublin South-West TD Ciarán Ahern have already voiced the importance of replacing these routes. Their concerns highlight how this gap negatively impacts local residents and climate goals.

We cannot wait indefinitely for the Metrolink or private operators to fill this void. A publicly subsidised solution is essential to meet the immediate needs of our communities.

Sign this petition today to urge the NTA to provide PSO services and restore reliable, affordable, and sustainable airport connectivity for all.

Let’s make our voices heard. Together, we can demand better public transport for Dublin.
