It's A Beautiful Thing! Working Together as a Community To Make a Nice Environmental Space for Everyone to Share!
Yes we were rezoned through the Mobile City Council so that we can do "Park Things because we are a Park" Thank you Mobile City Council and Legal Department!
Art Wimberly and Wesley Johnson of Mobile AL painted the pavilion and cleared a ton of deadwood trees, Arthur Gros built the raised garden beds so we can have butterfly/pollinator gardens! We repurposed the dead wood to the bottom of our raised garden beds using the Hugelkulture method of layering the beds.
We also thank Mr Gros for building the Purple Martin migration station for the Purple Martin Conservation Association and Highland Park Community Association. So that the people of Mobile, AL can participate as a community "with thousands of others who understand the future of purple martins is in our hands." And thanks to a generous donor Mr Gos has a plan for installing rain barrels scheduled on the HPca calendar of events. Wow!
Go Roof of Daphne AL put on a beautiful new roof for us! Go give them a great review because they did a stellar job. He went the extra measure to get the permits for us. He got his crew in and out in one day and cleaned the area perfectly. He's a five star review! https://www.yelp.com/biz/go-roof-daphne
Jerry Trumbo and Josie Keller of Bottom To Top Handyman Services of Mobile AL came to us highly recommended and did a great job! Very pleasant to work with and I'll be hiring them again! They built and put up our American Flagpole! Because what's a community park without an American Flag! https://nextdoor.com/pages/bottom-to-top-handyman-services-mobile-al/
We have a lot of plans and expectations for this area. We have partnered with Mobile Urban Growers for support and guidance. Our planned work days are Saturdays. Weather permitting. Check out their webpage. https://www.mobileurbangrowers.org/garden-map and you can check our live calendar for work day updates here https://highlandparkcommunityassociation.com/all-events/
And last but not least thank you to the Board of Directors of HPca, Inc without your commitment and dedication this park would not exist today. You were the last hope for this 25-acre land to save the wildlife habitat, the bird sanctuary, and the park for recreational use.
Here's the big news!!! Looking forward we are now planning a way to build a 5-8 acre fishing pond where we can teach our youth about fishing, wetland habitats, and clean water pond management right here at home!!
Bouquets of Thank yous to each of you wonderful people who supported and encouraged our efforts! This would not have been possible without your love and cheering us on. You've brought a lovely space for us all to enjoy, build for the future, and play in our community. We are steadily receiving donations of seeds, birdhouses, ideas, and donations to keep us motivated, the office open and the gardens growing! Gardens are a place where we can take heart, draw strength from the land and each other; this is a good and necessary thing for our species and all other species on planet earth.
Sincerely,
Sherry Lynn Gros (pronounced /ɡrō/), President, Highland Park Community Association, Inc, (a nonprofit incorporated community association, Mobile Alabama).
