The Issue

The Marlowe Theatre is a lifeline for Canterbury and Kent — often the only place people can see West End–quality shows without the cost and exhaustion of travelling to London. I’ve seen 40 shows at the Marlowe in 2025 alone, and I am deeply passionate about this theatre getting the funding it needs.

The Marlowe is supported by many businesses, but one stands out: Barclays, one of Europe’s biggest funders of fossil fuel expansion. Despite being such a huge company, Barclays isn’t even a gold-tier member. Many smaller local companies give more to the Marlowe, without carrying the same harmful ties.

If the Marlowe cut ties with Barclays, it would not be left without support. In fact, it could gain new backing from companies who have avoided sponsorship because of the fossil fuel connection.

We call on the Marlowe Theatre to end its partnership with Barclays and choose sponsors whose values reflect care, community, and creativity.

FAQ: How much does Barclays give to the Marlowe Theatre?

The Marlowe does not publish exact figures for its business memberships or sponsorships. Barclays is listed only as a Silver Business Member, which is a lower tier of support compared to Gold members and bespoke sponsors. This means Barclays’ contribution is modest relative to other supporters.

The issue is not the size of their donation, but the symbolism: Barclays is one of Europe’s largest funders of fossil fuel expansion. Their presence in our theatre carries reputational weight far beyond the financial amount.
