The Issue

During my time working with various nonprofits, I have witnessed firsthand the urgent need for a sustainable housing solution for the homeless population in our region. While our efforts to temporarily assist by sending a few individuals to hotels have provided undeniable relief, our limited funds restrict us from doing more. Deeply concerned by the thought of people enduring harsh weather conditions, it is clear to me that a more permanent solution must be implemented.

In Otero County, 75 families and 150 children are experiencing homelessness. Without a dedicated facility for the homeless, these families are exposed to the relentless cold and brutal New Mexico weather without proper protection. This is a humanitarian issue that can no longer be ignored.

Establishing a homeless shelter in our county would not only provide refuge for those in need but also serve as an entry point to services that can help individuals regain stability and transition into more permanent housing.

Investing in a homeless shelter is an investment in the future of Otero County and its people. The time for our local governments to take decisive action is now – the health, safety, and dignity of our homeless population depend on it. Please join me in urging our local state, county, and city governments to secure funding and support for a homeless shelter in Otero County, NM. Sign our petition to stand up for humanitarian relief and dignity for all.

I'm already working this in a couple different angles. While I appreciate your effort, it takes much more than a petition to implement. I believe the financial measures I've put into the budget already and plan to continue for a few budget cycles shows my support of a plan. I'm also traveling out of state with a group next month to tour a state of the art facility. How can you make a difference? Join forces with an organization already formed towards developing a plan such as 100% Otero. Look over other communities and find ordinances they have developed to help the homeless. Interview the homeless. I participated in the PIT Count in my district finding 14. Not one said they wanted to go to a shelter. So is a shelter the right use of our resources? A mental illness facility maybe? 100% Otero has been working on a direction for the best decision and I completely support their data and efforts. We must unite and combine ideas not work parallel or no project will be successful. Thank you for reaching out. I feel what I'm doing with action is more effective than a petition at this time. Thank you Amy
