Urge the LA Metro to Reroute the K Line Extension to Preserve Historic Black Neighborhoods
The Issue
As a resident and community member of Mid-City, Los Angeles, I am profoundly saddened to witness a threat to our heritage and the communal spirit via the proposed K line extension that may disrupt multiple historic black neighborhoods. It's not unknown that black communities have been subjected to consistent denial of their right to generate wealth and preserve their rich history. This proposed extension appears to be another blow to preserving the legacy of our black neighborhood in Mid-City, Los Angeles.
It's important to acknowledge that historically, transportation projects have often disproportionately impacted communities of color, leading to displacement and community upheaval. For instance, the construction of the Interstate Highway System during the 1950s and '60s led to the demolition of thousands of homes in African American neighborhoods (Source: Scorecard best practices, 2001). The destructive potential of this proposed K line extension might track along the same lines, eroding the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our community.
Embarking on a different route for the K line extension can prevent these potential disruptions to our community. In this era of social change and recognition of historical injustices, it is crucial that LA Metro make choices that respect and protect our neighborhoods' cultural integrity.
Join this effort to preserve our historic black neighborhood in Mid-City, Los Angeles. Ask the LA Metro to revise its plan and find an alternate route for the K Line extension that honors and safeguards our cultural heritage. Please sign this petition and lend your support to this worthwhile cause.
