El problema

I am an Irish mother to three wonderful children living in Spain. All three of my children are recognized by the Spanish State as my offspring. Yet, the Irish State fails to acknowledge this simple truth for two of them. They do not recognise me as the parent of my two eldest childen. This exclusion is causing unnecessary emotional distress for all of us.

In Spain, my motherhood is celebrated and protected by law, allowing me to provide a stable and supportive home environment. However,  in Ireland, there is a bureaucratic wall that denies my children the recognition they deserve as Irish citizens. This not only affects their legal status but also hinders their access to rights and opportunities that would be available to them if they were Irish. As things stand I couldnt move back to Ireland with my kids.

The Irish Government must realign its policies to reflect the evolving realities of diverse family structures. My children should be recognized equally, not only under Spanish law but also in Ireland.  Recognizing my motherhood in Ireland should be a priority so that my family can have the possibility of thriving in both of their home countries.

My motherhood and their right to Irish citizenship should not be questioned because of the means of their coming into the world. I was named as parent on their birth certs from the moment they were born.

International human rights organizations emphasize the importance of children's rights and the responsibility of nations to uphold these. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Ireland is a signatory, stands as a robust framework supporting the case for the equal treatment of my children.

I urge the Irish Government to mirror the progressive statutes of Spain. I ask them to ensure that all children of Irish parents have equal recognition.  Let's embrace inclusivity and justice for all families. I ask you to stand with me in this mission for equality and fairness.

Sign this petition to demand that the Irish Government takes prompt action to rectify this disparity, recognizing my children's rightful status as citizens.
Catchup Ireland and recognise my children as your citizens.
