Urge the EU to regulate harmful social media algorithms

Urge the EU to regulate harmful social media algorithms
The Issue
In today’s digital age, our reliance on social media has grown exponentially, affecting every facet of our daily lives. My journey with this issue began at Avans Hogeschool where, alongside my peers in the Act for Change Together minor, I explored the profound impact of social media on our health and well-being. Our mission is to shed light on the urgent need for change in the way social media companies operate, particularly concerning their engagement-based algorithms.
Evidence abounds proving how these algorithms perpetuate continuous scrolling, a practice that not only disrupts sleep patterns but also impairs concentration, especially among younger generations. The blue light emitted from screens is already a known disruptor of melatonin, impacting sleep quality, and consequently, mental health. According to the Royal Society for Public Health, excessive social media use has been linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and poor sleep habits. Statistics from the World Health Organization further emphasize that one in five adolescents suffers from mental health disorders, exacerbated by excessive screen time.
Our proposed solution is straightforward yet powerful: we call on the European Union and national governments to compel social media companies to incorporate features that limit the time spent on their platforms. This can include mandatory screen time trackers and notifications, as well as customizable time restrictions that allow users to manage their digital consumption more effectively. Such measures will bring awareness to individuals about their phone habits, empowering them to make healthier choices for their physical and mental well-being.
We believe this initiative will create a significant impact, setting a precedent for corporate responsibility in the digital realm. It is crucial that we act swiftly to protect the next generation from the unseen consequences of unchecked social media usage. Join us in urging decision-makers to hold these companies accountable and foster an environment where technology enhances, rather than hinders, our quality of life.
Sign this petition to stand with us in demanding a healthier, more balanced approach to social media use. Together, we can inspire lasting change for ourselves and future generations.
