June 19, 2025, Update for Urge MoDOT to Construct a Sound Wall Along Highway 270 for Noise Reduction

On June 17, 2025, I received documents for projects J6I1978 and J6I1830B. Neither of the projects (J6I1978 and J6I1830B) documents included a sound study/assessment. The information for both projects contains significant redactions. In a last attempt (without using professional help) to get sound studies/assessments from the MoDOT Open Records Request system, I opened a new request stating:

I attended an informal discussion by Quiet Communities on June 19, 2025, which covered etiquette when communicating with officials, noise, and current law relating to environmental issues. For me, the most essential points of this discussion were the recommendations to establish goals and desired outcomes with possible alternatives. My goals are (1) to get MoDOT to perform a professional sound study, and (2) to mitigate the noise from I-270. In my opinion, no alternative solution exists because I will not be deprived of my rights to be free from noise that jeopardizes my family's health and welfare. I lived in my home before MoDOT expanded I-270, creating this issue, and I do not understand how or why MoDOT determined my subdivision did not meet “all requirements” for a sound wall, without performing a study.

Next Steps:

I will give MoDOT Open Records, MS. Locke, and the OECA/EPA until July 15, 2025, to respond to my letters/request. Using the NIOSH Sound Level Meter App, I will log noise levels from I-270 multiple times a day over 10-15 days to provide a record. After July 16, 2025, I will contact the Missouri Attorney General, the Missouri Department of Public Health, and the Great Rivers Environmental Law Center.

Help Needed from Supporters:

how much encouragement, time, and/or effort you can give this cause to mitigate noise from traffic on I-270. Working towards mitigating noise from I-270 is time-consuming and exhausting. I am committed to this task.
