Urge the Canadian Federal Government to Implement TRC Calls for Indigenous Youth Justice

The Issue

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada has outlined 94 calls to action, several of which pertain specifically to Indigenous youth justice. These calls aim at rectifying the systemic injustices faced by Indigenous youth within the Canadian criminal justice system. However, many of these recommendations have yet to be fully implemented.

Indigenous youth are over-represented in the Canadian criminal justice system. According to Statistics Canada, while they represent only 8% of the overall youth population, they account for 46% of admissions into correctional services in 2016-2017 (Statistics Canada). This disproportionality is a clear indication that our current system is failing these young individuals.

The TRC's calls include measures such as eliminating disparities in funding for Indigenous children's education and implementing culturally appropriate early intervention programs. These actions can help prevent involvement with the criminal justice system and promote healthier communities.

We call on the federal government of Canada to uphold their commitment towards reconciliation by fully implementing all TRC calls related to Indigenous youth justice. It is time we address this issue head-on and work towards creating a fairer society where every child has an equal chance at success regardless of their ethnic background.

Please sign this petition urging our leaders not only acknowledge but act upon these necessary changes for a more equitable future.
