Urge the Calgary Flames to commit to a rebuild and fire Don Maloney
The Issue
As a dedicated and lifelong fan of the Calgary Flames, I have watched my team preach a winning culture to us, the loyal supporters, while often falling short of the ultimate goal—a Stanley Cup victory. For too long, this focus has been misdirected towards merely scraping into the playoffs rather than fostering a true championship-caliber team. Our voices have been ignored, and it's time for us to demand change.
The Flames have several talented players, yet many are approaching the twilight of their careers. To build a Stanley Cup contender, it is essential to maximize the potential of these players by securing future talent that can invigorate this beloved hockey club for years to come. This involves difficult decisions that require courage and foresight from the team ownership and management.
Don Maloney, with all due respect to his contributions, has not demonstrated the strategic initiative needed for such a transformation. His recent comments were nothing short of condescending and disrespectful to the fans. We urge the Flames ownership to step forward with a bold new vision, embracing a rebuild and entrusting Craig Conroy with the resources and authority to reshape our roster. Conroy’s understanding of the game and passion for success aligns with the spirit of Flames fans who are hungry for consistent, meaningful success.
Creating a Stanley Cup challenging team requires aligning our aspirations with strategic actions. The statistics speak for themselves—teams that have embraced a comprehensive rebuild often find themselves rewarded with long-term success. Look at the recent successes of the Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers, who built their championship-winning teams through strong foundational changes focused on the future.
Citing Buffalo - a team with more playoff victories than Calgary in the Salary cap era - as a cautionary tale about rebuilding, is insulting to our intelligence. Citing "the Dallas Model" - hitting on 3 foundational players with mid round picks - as an actionable plan, is insulting to our intelligence.
It is time to stop settling for mediocrity and start aiming for greatness. The core issue isn’t just about missing opportunities but rather fostering a lasting legacy for our team and city. This is more than just a game; it is a community’s shared dream.
Join me and fellow Flames enthusiasts in urging the ownership to embrace this necessary path and redefine the future of the Calgary Flames.
Our goal is 18,400 signatures - the number of seats in the new Scotia Place.
Let's send a message that resonates within the corridors of our team's leadership. Sign this petition today and take a stand for the future of our Flames!
