Urge the Australian government to address homelessness with urgent action
Urge the Australian government to address homelessness with urgent action
The issue
Growing up, I often walked past people who had to endure the night cold without a roof over their heads. The sight has always sparked a sense of deep empathy in me, a feeling that grew stronger as I understood that these individuals lacked the very basic comfort and safety that every human being deserves. It’s an issue that hits close to home and it's one that needs our collective attention and action.
Homelessness has been a persistent and rising issue in Australia, and it requires immediate intervention from those in power. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 116,000 Australians were recorded as experiencing homelessness on any given night as of the last census. This number is likely to have increased, particularly as housing affordability plummets. Everyone has the right to access appropriate housing, yet for many, this right is far from being fulfilled.
My approach to tackling this begins at the community level: a canned food drive within my school, supported by my teachers, aimed at helping those in immediate need. The collected goods will be donated to a reputable organization dedicated to assisting the homeless. While this is a small step, I believe community initiatives can draw attention and incite larger-scale action.
However, to make a meaningful and lasting change, governmental policy and action are crucial. We need comprehensive, long-term solutions such as increased investment in affordable housing, mental health services, and employment programs to support those who are at risk or currently experiencing homelessness. These solutions require action from elected officials and the government, whose responsibility it is to ensure the wellbeing and security of all Australians.
This petition calls on the Australian government to treat homelessness as the crisis it is and to implement effective strategies to reduce it significantly. Initiatives like funding for supportive housing, developing new policies that reduce homelessness, and strengthening community support services can be life-changing.
Help us advocate for those who deserve a chance to rebuild their lives with dignity and safety. Sign this petition to urge the Australian government to take decisive action against homelessness.
