Urge Teignbridge Council to Preserve Shaldon's Toilets

Urge Teignbridge Council to Preserve Shaldon's Toilets
The Issue
For families with young children, elderly residents, and individuals with medical needs, having easy access to public toilets is not just a convenience—it's a necessity. Every visit to the beach in Shaldon brings joy, but it also comes with the inevitable demand for clean and accessible public toilets. The current public toilets, situated on the Strand by Shaldon Beach and those at Ness Beach, are absolutely crucial for maintaining the area's charm and convenience.
Removing these facilities would disproportionately impact those who are already vulnerable, forcing them to navigate further distances just to meet basic needs. Young children often need immediate access to toilets, and elderly residents or those with health issues may find such distances overwhelming. It is unfair and impractical to expect local businesses to substitute for public restrooms, imposing additional burdens on them when they should be focusing on their own clients.
Furthermore, retaining these public toilets is essential for maintaining the Designated Bathing Water Classification, as they fall under the Environmental Agency's requirements for bathing water quality. Lack of appropriate sanitary facilities could lead to issues with compliance, potentially affecting the beach's status and attractiveness, which are vital for Shaldon's tourism and local economy.
The financial burden of transferring the cost of maintaining these essential facilities to the parish council would be prohibitive.
We urge Teignbridge District Council to recognize the importance of these facilities to both residents and visitors, ensuring they remain accessible and well-maintained. Please sign this petition to keep the Strand toilets as well as those at the Ness open and preserve the dignity, convenience, and quality of life for everyone in Shaldon.
