Urge TED/TEDx to Remove Laura Owens' TEDX Talk

Urge TED/TEDx to Remove Laura Owens' TEDX Talk
The Issue
In a viral TEDx talk titled “The Lifesaving Power of Kindness to Strangers,” speaker Laura Owens tells a dramatic story about being violently abused by her ex-boyfriend, Mike Marraccini, during a trip to Iceland in December 2016.
Owens never names him in the talk, but the photos and timeline confirm she is referring to Marraccini — a man who has never been charged, arrested, or convicted of any abuse. The two casually dated for several months, and when Marraccini declined to pursue a relationship, Owens retaliated with false abuse allegations.
In July 2018, Marraccini stipulated to a Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) without admitting wrongdoing, after months of relentless legal filings by Owens. He agreed out of mental and financial exhaustion caused by her repeated, vexatious litigation. And now, Owens is requesting a renewal of that order.
Since the release of Owens' TEDx talk, Marraccini has endured severe reputational damage, online harassment, and emotional trauma. His name has circulated as “the abuser” in Owens’ story, yet forensic evidence and court filings now prove her claims are false.
This is not the first time Owens has faced allegations of fraud. In May 2025, she was indicted in Maricopa County, Arizona on seven felony charges, including fraud, forgery, perjury, and tampering with physical evidence related to similar, separate incidents involving The Bachelor TV star Clayton Echard and another man, Gregory Gillespie. Her criminal trial is set for January 25, 2026.
In September 2025, in San Francisco Superior Court, Marraccini submitted forensic evidence that directly contradicts Owens’ narrative of abuse in Iceland. A judge has granted his motion for a two-day trial on October 21–22, 2025, where detectives from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office are expected to testify on his behalf.

What’s at Stake
When a talk shares unverified and outright false abuse allegations and remains online despite clear contradictory evidence, it sends a dangerous message: TED’s stage can be used to defame real people without consequence. Every view of that video deepens the harm to Mike who is now a happily married father of two young daughters. If TED allows falsehoods to masquerade as truth, how can the public trust its platform again?
We Urge TED and TEDx To:
- Immediately review Laura Owens’ TEDx talk in light of forensic evidence and ongoing criminal proceedings.
- Remove or suspend the video pending the results of an independent factual review.
- Strengthen editorial oversight to prevent unverified or defamatory stories from being shared on TED’s stage.
TED stands for ideas worth spreading, not lies worth streaming.
Let's join together to ensure Mike's reputation is restored and TED upholds the values that made it great.
