Urge Sunderland council to reinstate the pride flag at city hall
The Issue
As a resident of Sunderland, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision by Sunderland City Council to ban the Pride flag from City Hall. This action is more than just a symbolic gesture; it represents a step backward in our community’s commitment to inclusivity and equality, principles which are fundamental to a just society and critical to our own local values.
The Pride flag is a universal symbol of love, acceptance, and diversity, qualities that Sunderland should proudly stand for. Removing it contradicts the legal equality duties that the Council is obligated to uphold.
Sunderland City Council is bound by the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty. The Council’s own published guidance states that the General Duty requires public bodies to:
• Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
• Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
• Tackle prejudice
• Promote understanding
This legislation requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination and advance equality of opportunity for all, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
By denying the Pride flag its place at City Hall, Sunderland City Council sends a dangerous message to both residents and visitors – that Sunderland may not be a welcome or safe place for those who identify as LGBTQIA+. This is not the image we want to portray, nor is it the environment we want to cultivate as we approach 2026. A city that values diversity and inclusivity is vibrant, dynamic, and attractive. Every person in Sunderland, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, should feel welcomed and valued.
Moreover, Sunderland prides itself on being a city of growth and transformation. Embracing diversity is an essential part of this growth. Reinstating the Pride flag at City Hall would reaffirm our commitment to these values and demonstrate that we are forward-thinking and accepting. Such a move would resonate positively with local residents and tourists alike, and could serve to enhance Sunderland's reputation as a city that celebrates diversity and cherishes equality.
Join me in urging Sunderland City Council to reverse this decision. Let us stand together to ensure that our city is a beacon of diversity and inclusion. Sign this petition now to tell our leaders that reinstating the Pride flag at City Hall is not only the right thing to do, but also essential for the future image and harmony of Sunderland. Stand with us in making a statement that Sunderland is a city for everyone.
P.S. for those who feel this is woke, leftie etc here’s an important fact: inclusive cities consistently outperform their peers across measurable economic indicators.(https://www.imd.org/ibyimd/diversity-inclusion/beyond-the-backlash-why-lgbtq-inclusion-still-drives-economic-performance/
