The Issue

I am a lifelong resident of Southend-on-Sea, and have grown to deeply appreciate the majestic plane tree that has graced Chichester Road for over a century. This tree, affectionately known as Chester, is not just a beautiful landmark; it plays an essential role in our local ecosystem. It aids in air purification, flood control and provides cooling shade during hot summers.

Chester's benefits are not unique to our town alone. According to the Woodland Trust, mature trees like Chester can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year while releasing oxygen in exchange (Woodland Trust). They also help reduce urban runoff and erosion by storing water and breaking rainfall.

Despite these undeniable benefits, Southend Borough Council plans on removing this beloved tree. This decision is heartbreaking for me and many other residents who see Chester as part of our community's identity.

We understand that city planning can be complex with various factors at play. However, we believe there must be alternatives that would allow us to retain this invaluable natural asset. We urge Southend Borough Council to reconsider their plans and explore ways in which Chester can continue standing tall on Chichester Road.

Please join us in calling upon the council to preserve this symbol of nature's resilience and beauty - sign this petition today!
