The Issue

In our journey of service, at Mohau Cares Social Welfare Trust, we have been privileged yet saddened to witness the hardships faced by disenfranchised individuals throughout Limpopo province. Countless families we meet are caught in a relentless cycle of poverty that perpetuates various social problems, including violent crime, gender-based violence, teenage pregnancies, strained healthcare systems, and school dropouts. Our experience confirms that these issues stem largely from economic hardships and disparities in income distribution.

We believe that the implementation of a Basic Income Grant by the South African government is not just timely, but critically needed. Such a grant would go beyond providing mere financial relief; it would act as a catalyst to curb these social ills by offering a stable financial base upon which individuals can build better, more productive lives.

Basic Income Grant has been debated globally and its potential benefits are well-documented. Countries that have experimented with similar models have seen decreased crime rates and improved quality of life. In our own landscape, this grant could act as a powerful tool not just to alleviate poverty but also to encourage responsible behaviour. We propose that the grant be administered with mechanisms that reward good conduct, while individuals engaged in criminal activities are disqualified from receiving its benefits.

We have meticulously drafted an advocacy paper outlining how this Basic Income Grant can be practically and effectively implemented in South Africa. Our proposal addresses potential funding sources, implementation strategies, and compliance checks to ensure the success and efficiency of the program.

Our call to action is driven by our interactions with every struggling South African, whose dignity and potential deserve recognition and support. By transitioning from reactive to proactive social welfare policies, we can build a society anchored on equality and opportunity.

We urge you to join our cause. Sign this petition to press the South African government to expedite the implementation of the Basic Income Grant. Let us forge ahead with solutions that uplift and empower our communities.
