Subject: Urgent Concerns over School Meal Policy – Sharrow School, Sheffield
Prepared by: Emre Glenn Stanley Heald
Date: May 2025

Overview
A change to Sharrow School’s menu in 2021—removing all meat and failing to provide halal options—has seriously impacted children's health, breached legal protections, and ignored parental rights. This has been ongoing for years with no accountability.

Sharrow School appears to be the only known school in Sheffield to have a full vegetarian school menu . These changes were made without prior consultation and with no religious accommodations—unlike other schools in the city which maintain either halal provision or mixed-diet menus. This isolation in policy underlines a significant deviation from accepted standards and raises serious questions about equality, representation, and wellbeing in one of Sheffield’s most diverse educational environments.

As someone with a direct connection to this school—my younger sister attends Sharrow—I have seen the damage firsthand. She and her friends were reprimanded simply for expressing that they felt hungry or disliked the repetitive vegetarian options. My sister has complained of stomach discomfort and fatigue due to the food served. Even more distressingly, one child in the local park came up to me asking if I could buy them chicken and rice because the school isn't providing what they need. These children are from low-income families, and for some, the school lunch may be their only proper meal of the day. This situation is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. This is an immediate red flag.

1. Nutritional & Welfare Failures
Breaches of Government Food Standards:

No meat or poultry (should be served 3x/week)
No oily fish (required at least 1x every 3 weeks)
Protein sources are repetitive (mostly Quorn and cheese)
Excessive sugary desserts (served daily, allowed only 2x/week)
Health Consequences:

Children report low energy, stomach issues, and skip meals
For some, school food is their only proper meal
Excess sugar and poor variety go against NHS Eatwell Guide
Lacking key nutrients: fruit, veg, wholegrains, healthy fats

2. Cultural & Religious Injustice
Laws Violated:

Equality Act 2010 – Indirect discrimination against Muslim pupils
Human Rights Act (Art. 9) – Religious practice ignored
UNCRC (Articles 2 & 14) – Cultural and faith rights neglected
Practical Failures:

No halal or culturally sensitive meals
, no meat-based options despite cultural needs
Students excluded from full participation in mealtimes

3. Parental Exclusion
No prior notice or consultation with families
Complaints have been ignored or dismissed
Decisions were made without transparency or community voice

 4. Public Health Risks
Daily sugary puddings violate Public Health England limits
No alternative like fruit or yogurt
Encourages junk food habits after school

 5. Harm to Children
Many children go hungry or suffer discomfort at school
Some families in poverty rely entirely on school meals
Emotional distress, fatigue, and poor nutrition

 6. Legal Summary
  Law/Guideline
