Growing up as a Latino, I enjoyed, sang to, and found and inspiration in Shakira's music. Her unique blend of Latin and Arabic influences resonated with me, making her an icon I looked up to. It is disheartening that she has not used her influential platform to speak out against the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

The situation in Palestine is dire. According to Human Rights Watch, Israeli authorities are committing crimes against humanity of apartheid and persecution. The world cannot remain silent while such atrocities continue unabated.

Shakira's silence on this matter is particularly disappointing given her Lebanese roots and the influence they had on her music - an influence that has made her a global superstar. As one of the most successful Latin artists globally, with over 75 million records sold worldwide, Shakira has a responsibility to use her platform for good.

We are calling on Shakira not only because we admire her but also because we believe in the power of celebrity voices initiating change. We urge Shakira to publicly condemn the genocide happening in Palestine right now.
