Urge Severn Trent to Reconsider Price Increases for Their Water Services

The Issue

I am a single resident who has been diligently paying all my bills, while also running a small home-based business. The proposed water bill price hike by Severn Trent, unfortunately, looms over me like a dark cloud. But I am not alone, this predicament is shared by many families who are also going to face financial hurdles due to the substantial increment in the water bills.

Severn Trent's proposed remarkable increase in water charges is not just unreasonable but is also a threat to the financial wellbeing of consumers like myself who are already grappling with various other economic pressures. Enhanced water charges may indirectly affect local businesses too, as customers might curtail their spending in these areas to cover increased household expenses.

The financial strain on households is expected to intensify considering the UK inflation rate surged to 2.1% in May, above the Bank of England's 2% target. This price increase from Severn Trent therefore adds an additional burden on families who are already suffering from the cost of living crisis (source: The Guardian, June 16, 2021).

We are appealing to the empathy of Severn Trent. Water is a basic necessity, not a luxury. We understand that operating costs may rise, but pricing decisions should be taken keeping the socio-economic effects on consumers in mind, particularly during a time when many are still recovering from the pandemic.

We, therefore, urge Severn Trent to review their decision about raising their water services charges and consider the potential hardship this will impose.
