I recently visited the San Bernardino City Shelter with the hope of adopting a dog and giving a deserving animal a forever home. However, upon arrival, the customer service representative informed me that the dog I was interested in was housed in the back kennels, completely out of public view. This experience opened my eyes to an issue that could be hindering countless other potential adoptions and rescues.

In many animal shelters, particularly in San Bernardino, not all dogs are accessible for public viewing. Some dogs, categorized as 'adoptable' or 'rescuable,' are kept out of sight, predominantly in back kennels. This practice not only limits adoptions but can also diminish the chances for these dogs to find loving homes or transfer to rescue organizations that can provide the care they desperately need.

Allowing public, volunteers, and rescues direct access to view all dogs increases transparency and gives every animal an equal chance at adoption. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters annually, and only about 4.1 million are adopted. That's millions of animals, many of whom could find homes if they were simply visible to potential adopters.

Reputable shelters across the country have implemented open-access policies, resulting in higher adoption rates and enhanced community involvement. For example, the New York City Animal Care Centers operates with a transparent dog-viewing space, which has directly contributed to an increased rate of successful adoptions.

By changing this policy, the San Bernardino City Shelter can not only improve the adoption rates but also foster a sense of trust and engagement with the community. The decision to open up the viewing of all dogs would align the shelter with progressive practices that benefit both animals and potential adopters alike.
