The Issue

Avebury stone circle and henge is a site of unparalleled historical and cultural importance. As someone who frequently visits and connects with this ancient monument, it's deeply troubling to see it altered by the addition of a turf containing plastic mesh. Avebury is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a designation that demands the utmost respect and care for the preservation of its natural and cultural assets.

Unfortunately, the newly laid turf by the National Trust includes a plastic mesh that is neither necessary nor appropriate in this sacred landscape. The presence of plastic is harmful not only to the aesthetic integrity of the site but also to the environment and local wildlife. The sheep that graze around the stones, essential in maintaining the landscape, are at risk of eating the nettingand gettingit tangled inside them causinga slow painful death. Birds and small wildlife can easily become entangled in the plastic, leading to injury or worse. Likewise, other wildlife that inhabits the area could suffer from similar fates, disrupting the delicate balance of this historic ecosystem.

The plastic mesh is already beginning to show, a testament to the unsuitability of this addition to the Avebury site. If we are to maintain the sanctity and safety of Avebury stone circle, it's imperative that this plastic-laden turf is removed.

We are calling on the National Trust to act responsibly by removing the existing turf that contains the plastic mesh. They should replace it with a more environmentally conscious alternative, free from plastic and safer for all wildlife. This change is crucial to preserving the heritage and ecological balance of Avebury for current visitors and future generations alike.

Sign this petition and help ensure that Avebury retains its rightful place as a pristine site of historical wonder, free from unnecessary and harmful modern interventions. Your signature can make a difference in safeguarding the integrity and heritage of this incredible locale. Let us come together to protect this cherished site, ensuring its sacred beauty and ecological health are respected and preserved.
