The Issue

As an Indian-American physician living in Texas, I am profoundly disheartened and insulted by the recent remarks made by President Trump, referring to India, China, and immigrant families as "hellholes." These words are not just offensive; they deeply undermine the values of diversity and respect that our nation ought to stand for. It is especially disheartening given that many within our community, including myself, supported him in the elections, believing in a vision for America that upholds dignity and equality for all its citizens.

Such rhetoric has far-reaching impacts beyond just the words spoken. It affects the social fabric of our communities, potentially inciting division and prejudice, which many of us have spent years working tirelessly to break down. The United States is a melting pot of cultures, with immigrant families contributing to the nation’s advancement in countless ways, from healthcare and technology to education and entrepreneurship. Marginalizing these contributions with derogatory language only serves to hinder our collective progress.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, immigrant-led households in America contributed over $224 billion in taxes in 2020, illustrating the vital role immigrants play within our economy. The Pew Research Center highlights that immigrants constitute nearly 17% of the U.S. civilian workforce, a significant portion that drives innovation and economic growth. Statements that disparage immigrant communities threaten to detract from these impressive contributions and foster an unwelcome environment, contrary to the welcoming spirit America prides itself on.

Therefore, we call upon President Trump to retract his "hellhole" remark and issue a public apology to Indian-American, Chinese-American, and other immigrant families. We urge him to engage in respectful debate, fostering unity and inclusion rather than division. A public retraction not only acknowledges the hurt caused but also sets a precedent for a more respectful political discourse.

Our nation is made stronger by the diversity of its people. We implore President Trump to recognize the invaluable contributions of immigrant communities to the United States and commit to promoting a discourse rooted in respect and mutual understanding.

Please join me in urging President Trump to do the right thing. Sign this petition to demand a retraction and apology—an essential step towards healing and unity in our diverse nation.
