Urge PRASA to Lower Noise Levels Caused by Unnecessary Hooting in Muizenberg, Cape Town
The Issue
We as residents of Muizenberg, Cape Town, have been enduring the tormenting noise caused by train horns. These noises are not only disturbing our peace but also impacting our jobs as we have to halt our work and meetings every time a train passes by honking its horn.
The incessant hooting starts from 4 am, continues until after 9 pm, a torturous ordeal for all residents living near the train tracks. Our wellbeing is severely compromised due to the sleep deprivation and incessant noise, further exacerbated by the fact many of us are working from home.
PRASA, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, must take immediate action. While the use of horns is necessary for safety purposes, alternatives could be sought, like less disruptive warning methods or the noise suppressing barriers frequently used in urban railway sections worldwide.
According to the Environmental Noise Guidelines from the World Health Organization, exposure to noise levels greater than 53 decibels can result in negative health impacts. Unfortunately, the noise levels from our local train horns far exceed this.
We are calling upon PRASA to take our complaints seriously, reduce hooting, and explore effective and less disruptive safety measures. This is not just about getting a good night's sleep; it's about maintaining our mental health, our jobs, our lives. This noise pollution must be addressed. Sign this petition to stand with us, the residents of Muizenberg, in requesting PRASA take immediate action.
