Urge Penns Grove & Carneys point Township to restrict data centers

Urge Penns Grove & Carneys point Township to restrict data centers
The Issue
As a resident and homeowner in Penns Grove-Carneys Point, I am deeply concerned about the proposed development of data centers within our township. Thinking about our children's future, it's crucial that we consider the potential impact such developments could have on their well-being and the environment they grow up in.
Data centers, while integral to our digital economy, come with significant drawbacks when placed too close to residential areas, schools, and community spaces. Not only do they increase noise pollution, but they also lead to increased traffic and pose potential environmental risks due to their heavy energy usage.
Experts have shown that data centers can consume vast amounts of electricity, contributing to significant carbon footprints. A study from the Uptime Institute highlighted that data centers globally are responsible for approximately 1% of the world's electricity usage and this figure is expected to grow. Moreover, they generate considerable heat, sometimes affecting local climates. In a close-knit community like ours, these factors could diminish the quality of life, affect property values, and pose health risks, particularly for our children, who are more vulnerable to environmental changes.
We respectfully urge the Township Committee to consider these aspects and act swiftly to draft an ordinance that restricts or prohibits data center developments within township limits, especially near sensitive areas. By doing so, we would not only protect the environment but also preserve the character and integrity of our township for future generations.
