The Issue

Since the lock downs in 2020, I have watched with a heavy heart as young people in Osceola County, Florida, struggle under the weight of mental health issues, spiritual emptiness, and even suicidal thoughts and attempts. The absence of adequate spiritual and emotional support systems in our public schools has left parents and students feeling helpless and overwhelmed. As a concerned member of this County, Community Faith Leader and Minister to young people, I am urging the Osceola County school district to adopt and vote on a policy to implement a Chaplaincy program that aligns with Florida Law, HB931, passed by the Legislature on April 18, 2024. The community has been asking for this program to be implemented since May 2024 and with no valid reason, the Board refuses to pass it.

The Chaplaincy program represents a crucial step in providing students and their families with the hope and guidance they desperately need. Chaplains, trained professionals, can offer support that encompasses both spiritual and emotional dimensions, thereby addressing the holistic needs of our students. In times when our youth face unprecedented challenges, integrating such a program can give them a sense of purpose and belonging, reinforcing their mental resilience and well-being.

Evidence from similar initiatives across the country and 23 other Nations have demonstrated significant benefits, including the reduction of anxiety, depression, and related mental health issues among students. Moreover, the presence of chaplains in schools has been correlated with improved academic performance and increased levels of positivity and community engagement among students.

We, as a community, have the unique opportunity to be pioneers in providing a comprehensive support system for our youth. The time to act is now. Let the voices of our students, parents, and faith-based communities be heard. Let us come together to persuade the Osceola County Board members to embrace this necessary change, ensuring our children access the support they deserve to navigate life's challenges with confidence and hope.

We need your help to make this vision a reality. By signing this petition, you lend your voice to the growing demand for an Osceola County Chaplaincy program, a resource that can change lives. Please join us in making a tangible difference for our community's youth. Together, we can create a supportive environment that nurtures and uplifts every student in Osceola County. Sign the petition today and help us bring this much-needed program to our schools.
