Urge Ontario to restore Highway 417 sound barriers and trees in Ottawa
The Issue
Since 2024, life has been a daily struggle for my family, neighbors, our pets and the wildlife living along Highway 417 in Ottawa, Ontario. Our governments have removed or damaged sound barriers. This combined with hundreds of mature trees vanishing has disrupted our lives and most importantly, our nights.
The noise is incessant, drowning our attempts to get a peaceful night’s sleep. Beyond the sleepless nights, contaminants and pollution enter our properties from the highway. What's more concerning is that children in nearby schoolyards and parks breathe in toxins and are exposed to the uproar from the bustling Highway 417. (The associated AI generated image reflects the extreme conditions created when sound barriers and natural protection are absent along a busy highway).
The benefits of sound barriers and trees cannot be overstated. They provide essential protection against noise and reduce exposure to exhaust emissions and other pollutants from the highway. Scientific studies consistently demonstrate negative health impacts from prolonged noise exposure and air pollution, including stress, high blood pressure, respiratory issues, and other harmful effects, particularly among children, seniors, and people with health conditions.
The most impacted communities include Little Italy, The Civic, Mechanicsville, Hintonberg, and Hampton Park. Once thriving amidst green foliage and serene soundscapes our communities have seen their quality of life dwindle. We are calling on both the Province of Ontario and the City of Ottawa to prioritize public and environmental health by urgently replacing sound barriers and replanting viable trees to restore the natural noise insulation and air purification. No more excuses.
Protecting the health of our communities cannot be postponed or ignored. We call upon the government of Ontario to complete the sound barriers through their Kiewit Dufferin Midtown Partnership contract # GC 2020-4075 that they set up with our tax dollars! We also call upon the City of Ottawa to replace trees that were removed due to its approvals of several flagrant developments that seem to be out of scope with municipal building requirements and zonings.
Restore tranquility to our neighbourhoods and protect our health. We need to sleep peacefully again and the children deserve to play, learn and grow in a safe environment.
This petition respectfully urges the authorities to act swiftly to remedy this issue for the wellbeing of all.
