In Ontario, each passing day is marked by the growing piles of end-of-life tires accumulating across our province. As consumers continue to purchase new tires, the strain on existing tire collection sites, many of which are at or beyond capacity, becomes increasingly untenable. This crisis not only poses a logistical nightmare but also has dire environmental consequences. That's why I am urgently calling for the Ontario government to increase the quota for end-of-life tire collection from the current, insufficient 65% to a comprehensive 100%.

Ontario's landscape is marred with tire piles that are not just eyesores; they are potential breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests like mosquitoes, source fires that can cause untold environmental damage, and contribute significantly to pollution. By failing to collect and recycle 100% of used tires, we are allowing precious materials to be wasted, which could otherwise be repurposed into other industrial products.

Other jurisdictions have successfully implemented policies to manage end-of-life tires at full capacity, proving that such a feat is not only possible but immensely beneficial. Countries such as Sweden boast a collection rate close to 100%, enabling the transformation of waste into resources while simultaneously protecting their natural environment. Why should Ontario lag behind when we have the technology and ability to create such impactful change?

Increasing the collection rate to 100% will require robust support from the government, starting with legislation mandating comprehensive collection policies. Additionally, existing tire collection programs must be provided greater logistical and financial support to expand their capacities and reach. Partnering with local municipalities and encouraging private sector involvement can also enhance the effectiveness of this initiative.

Ultimately, moving towards a zero-tolerance policy for tire waste aligns with Ontario's commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. Our children's future relies on the actions we take today. It's time to show that we care about the health of our environment and the well-being of our communities by demanding that all used tires are responsibly collected and recycled.
