Urge Oakland Hall Homeowners Association to Allow Chicken Keeping

Urge Oakland Hall Homeowners Association to Allow Chicken Keeping
The Issue
I am a resident of Oakland Hall, where along with many of my fellow neighbors, the rising cost of groceries is causing significant strain on our household budgets. With particular emphasis on the cost of eggs, a staple for many households, the situation is accelerating towards untenability. One sustainable solution, allowed under recent amendments to Calvert County's zoning regulations, is the keeping of chickens. Unfortunately, this is currently not permitted in our own neighborhood by the Oakland Hall homeowners association.
Keeping chickens can provide families with a steady supply of fresh eggs, reducing grocery costs and offering a degree of food security. Additionally, chicken keeping can have a positive impact on the environment, as chickens can consume leftovers and pests, reducing waste and the need for pesticides. Evidence suggests that hen-housed eggs have less cholesterol, less saturated fat, increased vitamins, and more omega-3 fatty acids than their factory-farmed counterparts, providing a healthier alternative for families (National Geographic, 2014). Additionally, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization also recognizes the potential of backyard poultry in strengthening food security at the household level.
Therefore, we urge the Oakland Hall homeowners association to reconsider its rules, align with the new Calvert County zoning regulations, and allow us to keep chickens. We believe adopting such changes will not only alleviate pressure on our grocery budgets, but will also promote a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle within our community.
